MY GOOD FRIENDS

'This song is about this sort of self-preservation part of my personality. There’s a part of me that’s always been really cautious, from the time I was a little kid; just really watching out for how things could get sideways really quickly. It’s humbling how many of my old friends have met their untimely deaths because they thought that the world was a safe place and nature was benevolent and they were watched over. I have this side of me that has kept me alive. I’m basically saying that I’m not going to be the hero who runs into the burning building. No, I’ll be the one who’s already outside.”

— David Wilcox on “My Good Friends”

Those who are familiar with David Wilcox albums know how exhaustively he pours his heart and soul into his songwriting and recording. It's his technical ability and meticulous craftsmanship that elevate this work, as he employs an impressive repertoire of tunings and cut capos in his unique approach to the guitar. More than anything, however, it is the intimate storytelling and the deeply held messages of Wilcox’s lyrics that are taken to heart and held so closely by his listeners. On May 11 the beloved singer-songwriter returns with The View From the Edge, his first album since 2014’s Blaze. It's an album that reflects four years of thinking, writing, crafting, playing, and life.

BLAZE

It’s about feeling very much alive. It’s about the memories of leaving town on an ordinary work day, past the usual sights that don’t look so usual any more because you have made your break with it. It’s about the point where the prairie suddenly changes, and the road drops down as the land goes from endless flat to carved out canyon-lands. In other words, life gets deep and complex and interesting.

There is a subtle musical instrument on this recording that adds to what you hear. It’s the room. Not just that it’s a great sounding studio with great microphones and all that, the cool part was that it wasn’t just the microphones that were listening. The Monastery was filled with listeners who had come long distance to help with this live recording of all new songs. We told them up front that this was going to be a different sort of concert.  No applause at the end of each song until the last guitar note had faded out. Especially with new songs, the people I’m playing for always affect the way I play. I can feel their hearts somehow.

You know, if you've ever fallen through the ice, what it's like to be so focused that you feel suddenly enlightened. All the superfluous thoughts are instantly gone because you know that if you are to survive, all of your attention is required. Well, this was sort of like that. My passion for getting these songs recorded with all of my heart and all of my voice influenced  thousands of small decisions, so that everything mattered and all of me was required. Even little decisions like what to have for lunch became infused with a deeper question: what would be best for the music?

Please keep hands and feet inside the vehicle until it has come to a complete stop. These are travel songs, but hopefully they're not just postcards of what I've seen. Each of these songs has a particular vantage point, but together they outline an inside journey that shows not just what I've been looking at, but rather how our travels have changed the way I see.

Hello, my friend. I wish I could be there to see these songs find you, wherever you are, as you listen to this CD. I don't want to just write a postcard from the place these songs can take you. I'd rather we were on a road trip with this CD playing. I could see your reaction as the songs come back around and carry us through the miles.

This is a collection of ancient mystic poems, drawn from across the world's major faith traditions, made into songs by David Wilcox and Nance Pettit. This project benefits the Partners in Conflict and Partners in Peacebuilding Project at The Center for International Development and Conflict Management, based out of the University of Maryland. This project works to end intractable conflicts around the world through new and innovative person to person diplomacy.

These days, there's so much adversity and loss of hope that anything you can offer that's on the positive side is a welcome relief. This record goes through some tough issues and carries a stronger hope by the time it reaches the end. That hope is that our lives will have greater meaning because we have this opportunity to do some emotional alchemy. To take this sorrow and hopelessness and to transform it, and to see that it's because of this frightening backdrop that our lives are going to mean something, that our actions will mean something.

I have never believed that my voice or my guitar were worth listening to because of how well I sing or play. But I will stand up for a song that has something to say because I believe in the message. I believe in the power of a clear humble song to change lives. I used to get nervous before a gig because I wondered if I deserved to be up in front of all those people. "Of course you don't deserve it," the music answered, "But that's not the right question. There's something that matters more than what you deserve. Look at these people who have come out on a night like tonight to gather in these four walls to maybe feel something that will wake them up to life again. The question is not what you deserve, but what they deserve. They deserve to feel something clear and strong, and if all they've got here tonight is you, then for their sake, get out of your own way and let the music through. So, here are some songs. I hope they serve.

Some people look at a glass and say it's half empty. David Wilcox looks at a glass and wonders about the people who left their fingerprints on it, the milestones they were toasting, the breakups they were mourning.

Though Wilcox's topics may at first seem discouraging, his sensitive and human handling of them teaches us all to find the music in even the most difficult aspects of our lives.

To you: This recording project has been a two-year process and there's a big cast of characters who gave it life. As I think back on the whole story, I am thankful for everyone who was there along the way.

Comic, bawdy, whimsical, sentimental, touching, these songs are in essence novelty material, and it is one of the characteristics of novelty songs that, like jokes, they are at their best the first time you hear them.
